DCS vs SCADA:
two philosophies of control.
DCS and SCADA were born in the same decade to solve opposite problems. A DCS keeps five thousand interacting loops steady inside one fence; a SCADA system watches five hundred kilometers of pipeline through a radio that drops out in every thunderstorm. Most explanations give you a feature table. Here you get both machines to operate. You cut their cables, kill their controllers, add their instruments and count their messages, and along the way you get a feel for where each philosophy comes from. PLCs sit in the middle of the story, which is why a PLC academy has to tell it.
Answers to different questions
🗺️ DCS and SCADA aren't rival products on one shelf. They're answers to different questions: 'how do I hold a continuous process steady?' vs 'how do I supervise machines I can't drive to?'. Get the question right and the choice mostly makes itself.
Operate, don't memorize
🎛️ every chapter simulates one of the real differences: where control lives, what the wire carries, how engineering scales and what dies when the hardware dies. You'll still meet the feature table, but by then it's a souvenir.
