Energy & Sustainability:
make the invisible kilowatt visible.

For most plants, energy is one of the largest variable costs, and one of the least watched. Power flows in all month, then the bill arrives as a single shocking number and nobody can say which machine, shift or habit caused it. The tool that can fix this is already standing next to every motor. The PLC can meter power, total it into energy and tie it to production, so a mystery bill becomes a number somebody can act on. This module covers the energy side of automation: the difference between kW and kWh, how to get real measurements into a controller, the baselines and per-unit metrics that show true efficiency, and how to hunt down the waste that drains money and carbon (idle load, demand peaks, compressed-air leaks). The method follows ISO 50001. Work through it and you'll be the controls engineer who can prove a 12% saving instead of just claiming one.

You can't manage what you don't measure

📊 a monthly energy bill is a post-mortem: it tells you what happened once it's too late to control it. Metering at the machine turns 'energy went up' into 'Line 2's idle load doubled on the night shift'. People shrug at the first sentence and fix the second.

kW is not kWh

⚡ the pair people mix up most often in the field: power (kW, the instantaneous rate) versus energy (kWh, the accumulation over time). The bill is in kWh and the meter reads kW. Getting from one to the other is integration, and most of this module is built around it.

Nothing here is tied to one vendor. ISO 50001 (energy management) frames the method, power meters speak Modbus or pulse outputs on every platform, and the kW→kWh integration is identical on TwinCAT, Siemens, Rockwell and the rest. The physics and the maths don't care about the logo.
Assumes only basic familiarity with analog metering and operator HMIs. You don't need any energy background.
