The Logix Ecosystem

"Studio 5000" is the umbrella; Logix Designer is the controller-programming app inside it (the old RSLogix 5000, renamed). Around it sit the controller families — ControlLogix, CompactLogix, GuardLogix — and the wider FactoryTalk world for HMI and data. Here's the map, plus a tool to pick the right controller.

01 · Pick the controller

Which Logix for the job?

They all run the same Logix engine and the same Studio 5000 — so your skills carry across the whole family. They differ in size, I/O style and whether they do safety. Answer the two questions and get a recommendation.

2 · Does it need integrated functional safety (E-stops, light curtains to SIL 3)?

Because it's one engine and one toolset, you can prototype on a CompactLogix and scale to a ControlLogix without relearning anything — the program ports, you just re-target the controller and remap I/O. That portability across the family is the quiet superpower of the Logix platform.

The flagship — large, modular, multi-controller chassis for big lines and process. Redundancy options. The 1756 family (5570/5580/5590).

CompactLogix
Compact, cost-effective, often single-box for machines and skids. The 5370/5380/5390/5480 family — same Logix, smaller footprint.

GuardLogix / Compact GuardLogix
A ControlLogix or CompactLogix with the certified safety task built in (Track 08). Standard + safety on one controller.

Micro800
Micro/standalone controllers (Micro810/820/850/870) for small machines — programmed in Connected Components Workbench, not Studio 5000.

03 · The software stack

Studio 5000 & FactoryTalk

🧩 Studio 5000 Logix Designer — program the controller (this is where every track so far lived). Formerly RSLogix 5000.
🖥️ FactoryTalk View (SE / ME) — the HMI/SCADA layer: operator screens bound to controller tags, site-wide or on a panel.
🔗 FactoryTalk Linx — the comms backbone that connects software to controllers (the old RSLinx).
📊 FactoryTalk Historian / Analytics — log, trend and analyse production data across the plant.

That's the Rockwell stack end to end: design the logic in Logix Designer, visualise it in FactoryTalk View, connect it with Linx, and mine it with Historian — all speaking the same tag database you built in Track 02. You've now toured the whole Logix world.
