Robot Synchronization in Safety Mode — ABB SafeMove Procedure
ABB · intermediate · 15 min
Step-by-step procedure to synchronize an ABB robot in SafeMove safety mode using the FlexPendant. Covers PPE, manual mode selection, SYNCRO routine execution, axis verification, and return to automatic mode.
SafeMove synchronization is required after maintenance, position recovery, or any event that disrupts the robot's safety reference on ABB controllers. This procedure works for ABB IRB-series robots running RobotWare with the SafeMove option enabled, including IRB 4600, IRB 6700, IRB 1600, and IRB 2600 platforms.
The synchronization process uses the FlexPendant to switch between manual and automatic operating modes, execute the SYNCRO routine in the program editor, and align the SafeMove safety controller with the robot's actual axis positions through the SafeMove Visualizer.
This guide covers the complete twelve-step procedure from PPE preparation through automatic mode handover. Common scenarios requiring synchronization include power loss recovery, controller replacement, calibration updates, and resolving SafeMove configuration mismatch errors.
Key points
- Manual mode selector key required — robot must be in semi-manual (T1) before starting
- Default ABB user password: robotics
- SYNCRO routine must exist in the active program module
- All six axes must read 0.00° before synchronization
- Procedure typically takes 10–15 minutes
- Required after maintenance, controller replacement, or power loss
