Leuze MLC/MLD Light Curtain — Alignment & Errors

Leuze · intermediate · 25 min

A Leuze MLC or MLD safety light curtain uses its 7-segment display to tell you whether it's misaligned, running on a weak signal, or in a fault interlock. Learn to read the alignment segments, use the alignment aids, and clear the E30/E31 contactor-monitoring lockout.

ℹ️ On a Leuze MLC/MLD, a slowly flashing green receiver means OSSD on but weak signal — it's working, but barely. Fix the alignment before it trips. The 7-segment display also shows alignment segments and error codes like E30/E31.

Read the receiver status

A Leuze MLC / MLD safety light curtain signals its state on the receiver, and one pattern is the early warning everyone should know:

  • Green flashing slowly (~1 Hz) = OSSD ON but weak signal. The machine can still run, but the margin is low — check the alignment or clean the beam-exit window. Ignore it and it becomes a nuisance trip.

The 7-segment alignment display

The 7-segment display switches to alignment mode when the device hasn't been aligned yet, or when the protective field has been interrupted (after ~5 seconds). In alignment mode it splits the field into thirds:

  • Segment 1 = the beams in the upper third of the field.
  • Segment 2 = the middle third.
  • Segment 3 = the lower third.

That tells you where the misalignment is — e.g. only the top segment failing points you at the top of the array.

Align it properly

Leuze provides alignment aids: the LA-78U (a red laser pointer) and the AC-ALM-M (shows signal strength). To align:

  1. Rotate the transmitter to change the receiver's OSSD outputs from RED (off) to GREEN (on).
  2. If the outputs won't turn on, use the alignment aid to fine-tune the rotation.
  3. Always finish alignment on the receiver for the best, most stable result.

Good alignment is what turns that weak-signal slow-flash back into a solid, high-margin green.

The E30/E31 contactor-monitoring lockout

Error codes E30 / E31 on the display indicate a contactor-monitoring (EDM) problem — the light curtain is watching the feedback of the contactors/relays it controls, and that feedback didn't match the expected state. The receiver switches to the fault interlock (lockout) state, from which it can only be returned to normal operation through the proper procedure. Check the EDM feedback loop: the guided/force-guided contacts of the downstream contactors, their wiring, and their timing. A welded contact or a broken feedback wire will hold E30/E31.

Step-by-step

  1. Slow-flashing green? Weak signal — align and/or clean the beam-exit window before it trips.
  2. Alignment mode on the display? Read which segment (top/middle/bottom third) is failing.
  3. Align with the LA-78U / AC-ALM-M: rotate the transmitter RED→GREEN, finish on the receiver.
  4. E30/E31? Contactor-monitoring/EDM fault — check the external contactors, their force-guided feedback and wiring, then reset per the proper procedure.
  5. Re-validate the protective function after any alignment or wiring change.

Never do this

Never bridge or defeat the EDM/contactor-monitoring feedback to silence an E30/E31 — that monitoring exists to catch a welded contactor that could leave the machine unable to stop. Fix the real contactor/wiring fault, reset properly, and re-validate.

Key points

  • A slowly flashing green receiver (~1 Hz) means OSSD on but weak signal — check alignment or clean the beam-exit window before it becomes a nuisance trip.
  • The 7-segment display enters alignment mode when unaligned or after the field is interrupted >5 s; segments 1/2/3 map to the upper/middle/lower thirds of the field.
  • Align with the LA-78U laser pointer or AC-ALM-M signal-strength aid: rotate the transmitter to turn receiver OSSDs RED→GREEN, and always finish on the receiver.
  • Error codes E30/E31 indicate a contactor-monitoring (EDM) fault; the receiver enters fault interlock and needs the proper reset procedure.
  • Never bridge or defeat the EDM feedback to clear E30/E31 — check the external contactors, force-guided feedback and wiring, fix the cause, then re-validate.

Codes and symptoms

Green flashing slowly (~1 Hz) — OSSD on, weak signal
The outputs are on but the signal margin is low. Check alignment and clean the beam-exit window before it drops out and trips the machine.
Alignment mode (segments 1/2/3) — Not aligned / field interrupted
The 7-segment display shows the upper/middle/lower thirds of the field. Use the LA-78U or AC-ALM-M aid; rotate the transmitter RED→GREEN and finish on the receiver.
E30 / E31 — Contactor-monitoring (EDM) fault
Feedback from the monitored contactors didn't match; the receiver enters fault interlock. Check the external contactors and force-guided feedback wiring, then reset properly.
