ABB Robots Troubleshooting & Procedures
ABB is a global leader in industrial robotics and automation. ABB robots run RobotWare on IRC5 and OmniCore controllers, programmed in RAPID.
Step-by-step procedures
- Robot Synchronization in Safety Mode — ABB SafeMove Procedure — Step-by-step procedure to synchronize an ABB robot in SafeMove safety mode using the FlexPendant. Covers PPE, manual mode selection, SYNCRO routine execution, axis verification, and return to automatic mode.
- ABB IRC5 — Revolution Counter & SMB Battery — An ABB IRC5 robot that comes up with error 20032 'Revolution counter not updated' has lost its axis position memory — usually a flat SMB battery or an unclean power-down. Learn to read the event log, replace the SMB battery, and re-update the revolution counters.
Tips & tricks
FlexPendant default password
The default user account on ABB FlexPendant is 'Default User' with password 'robotics'. Used for normal operator-level access.
Switching to manual mode requires the key
ABB controllers require the physical mode selector key to switch between Auto, Manual Reduced (T1), and Manual Full (T2).
RobotStudio is free for educational use
ABB RobotStudio is fully free for offline programming, simulation, and learning. Download requires an ABB account but no license key.
RAPID variable persistence requires PERS or VAR
In RAPID, variables declared with VAR reset on power cycle. Use PERS for variables that must survive controller restarts (counters, recipe data).
Always verify axis positions before SafeMove sync
Before running SafeMove synchronization, verify all six axes read 0.00° on the Position window. Mismatched starting positions cause synchronization to fail.
